DENBY DALE PARISH WALKING GROUP

Best Foot Forward!

Denby Dale Parish Walking Group invites you to join them for their programme of walks running from June 2010 to November 2010.
In respect of the Group's Liability Insurance non members may walk with the Group, but must become members by their third walk.
All the walks are reasonably easy and suitable for families. They are generally 4/6 miles long and take 3/4 hours including a short break. Please bring refreshments and carry a waterproof jacket. Stout footwear is also advisable when walking in the countryside. Children must be accompanied by an adult and dogs must be kept under close control at all times.

Denby Dale Parish (click here for location map) is situated in an attractive and extremely pleasant rural and semi-rural area approx. 8 miles southeast of Huddersfield and a similar distance from Wakefield and Barnsley. It contains various other settlements, including (for example) Emley, Skelmanthorpe, Scissett, Clayton West, Upper/Lower Denby, High Flatts, Birdsedge and Upper/LowerCumberworth. The market towns of Penistone and Holmfirth are not far away and the centres of major cities such as Sheffield, Leeds and Bradford are less than 20 miles (half an hour's drive) away. It's less than 30 miles to the centre of Manchester!

There is plenty of very attractive walking country within Denby Dale Parish itself (DDPWG was set up by the Parish Council in the mid-1990s to walk and report on the condition of public rights of way within the Parish area) and we do therefore try to walk locally when possible. However, we often go further afield, to places such as the Holme Valley, Langsett and Bradfield (areas wholly or partly within the Peak District National Park, which is very close to Denby Dale).

Although most members are from the Denby Dale Parish area, some live in places such as Kirkburton, Penistone and Holmfirth - so you are most welcome to join us even if you live some distance away!! We are a very friendly lot and welcome new faces.

We often walk in areas where there is a good pub or cafe (for after-walk meals, etc.) if anyone wishes to partake - though some people prefer to go straight home, which is fine.

The starting points of walks outside the immediate area are not always accessible by public transport, so anyone who doesn't have access to a car or who would like to car-share - this is anyway a good idea on environmental grounds - should make contact to discuss. Transport is easily arranged in most cases and nobody should worry about how to get there (just ask and we'll do our best to help you).

We sometimes arrange day trips to more distant places, using a minibus hired from the Denby Dale Centre (contact us for details). Once a year we book self-catering accommodation for a week or so in a good walking area such as the Lake District or Northumberland - usually in May or June (a good time is guaranteed). The annual 'Strawberry Tea' is also a fixture and we arrange an annual evening meal in a local pub or restaurant (usually in Jan). Some members meet once per month (usually the last Wednesday) for lunch at a local pub (not strictly part of the Group's activities but enjoyable) and groups of individual members sometimes get together to do more strenuous walks outside the normal 'calendar' of events.
