INTRODUCTION

The Rotherham Metro Group of the Ramblers Association was formed in early 1986 and this year is celebrating its 20th anniversary. The Group represents most of the area of the Metropolitan Borough of Rotherham except for the townships of Kilnhurst, Swinton, Wath-upon-Dearne, West Melton and Brampton which all fall within the area of our friends in the adjoining Dearne Valley Group.

About The Group

Over the years the Rotherham Metro Group has built up a reputation for being friendly and welcoming. At the present time we have just over 300 members. A full programme of walks and social events is run each year, which are open to both members of the Ramblers’ Association and non-members alike. If you would like to come on a walk have a look at our programme and see which ones best suit you. If you are new to walking or are returning to it after a break then why not try one of our shorter walks. Why not bring along some family and friends.

Programme Of Walks

The Group aims to cater for all ramblers and plans its walking programme around the requirements of our members and the availability of voluntary walk leaders from within   the Ramblers™ Association. We endeavour to offer as varied a range of walks as possible within our diverse local landscapes. Our walks take place every Saturday and every other Wednesday. These are normally circular routes finishing at the original starting point and covering distances of between 5 and 16 miles. Most of the walks are in South and West Yorkshire, Derbyshire and Nottinghamshire with occasional forays into Lancashire, Cheshire and Staffordshire.

Both terrain and walking conditions can vary considerably so those new to walking are advised to check our Guidance Notes (click here) before selecting a walk.

Programme Of Social Activities

In addition to our walks the Group organises a programme of social events. These are normally held on the fourth Wednesday in each month and feature talks, slide shows, visits to places of interest and light- hearted games evenings. Most of these are held at the Woodlands Club, Ridge Road, Rotherham (opposite Clifton Park).

Other Group Activities

As well as our walking and social activities the Group is actively involved in other aspects of footpath work. These include:

  • The Footpath Committee - The main role of this Committee is to respond to formal consultations received from Rotherham Council on proposals for the creation, closure or diversion of rights of way. In addition the Committee plays its part in helping to promote the footpath network and check that it is maintained and useable.
  • Publications and publicity - The Group has produced an information pack on the Rotherham Ring Route, a 50 mile walk around the periphery of the borough. The pack splits this up into 10 sections which can be used to plan shorter walks to meet individual needs. It is available from the Tourist Information Centre in Rotherham priced at Ł2.
  • Volunteer Days - The Group takes part in various activities which involve members in work to footpaths or promoting walking and the Ramblers. For more information on future events see Group News Items.
