About the GroupChesterfield and North East Derbyshire is situated at the eastern edge of the Peak District National Park. The surrounding countryside is very varied, including farm, park and moorland with several Country Parks and Areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty located close by. There is a wealth of walks, ranging from the historic towns and villages in the Peak District through to attractively restored former industrial areas to the east. There are several long distance paths nearby, including the High Peak Trail, Limestone Way and Cuckoo Way (along the Chesterfield Canal towpath). The thriving Group is part of the South Yorkshire and North East Derbyshire Area of the Ramblers’ Association and has around 680 members. Our programmes, published in March and September each year offer a very wide choice of walks in different areas and of varying length and pace. The summer programme contains around 200 walks on different days (Thursday and Fridays currently being the only days there are no walks). Our experienced leaders welcome newcomers and our walks make use of both public transport and private cars. There are walks especially for young children (and parents/grandparents) and each month there is a walk for blind people and others with sight impairments. There are occasional coach trips to places further afield. There is also a separate Group in Chesterfield for younger ramblers-click on Chesterfield 20-30s Group for more info and programme details. The Group also has a team which assists with footpath maintenance and deals with any problems reported about footpaths in the area. Please come and join us. New members are always made to feel welcome and you will make lots of new friends. For details of membership, please e-mail Basil Merry. For any other information about the Group and its activities, contact David Blackburn (see link below). CHESTERFIELD ROUND WALK This is a varied and attractive 34-mile walk around Chesterfield, opened in June 2005. It is waymarked, well maintained and there is a very comprehensive leaflet about the route and points of interest. It is designed to be done in stages and there are excellent public transport links from the Town Centre
